About SASI ....
Shiprock Associated Schools, Inc. (SASI) is a Bureau of Indian Affairs funded grant organization located on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico. The Corporation's roots began in 1976 as a High School program designed to address the needs of those students who had not succeeded in area public schools. Due to the overwhelming success of the high school program, the SASI Board of Directors was asked to take over an early childhood program operating on the same campus in the early 1980's. Backed by outstanding parental support, this early childhood program evolved into the successful elementary and mid-school programs that complement our high school program today.

Since its inception in 1976, classes were housed in converted dormitories built for a large boarding school built in the 1950's. After years of battling rusty water, inconsistent heating and cooling, no gymnasium and small classrooms never designed for educational purposes, an application was submitted for New School Construction and accepted in 1993. Since construction funding is dependent upon congressional appropriations, it was not until July 2000 that the first shovel of dirt was turned for this new facility.
After many long years of planning, design and construction, the new campus was completed and dedicated on August 5, 2002. With a total cost of $26.9 million, the new facility provides over 125,000 square feet of educational space for 450 K-12 students. The new facility includes extensive technology as well as two Navajo culture classrooms with a traditional hogan shape including a skylight for the smokehole.
SASI is a nonprofit organization incorporated by both the Navajo Nation and the State of New Mexico. The Corporation receives its funding through a Public Law 100-297 Indian Self-determination grant with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for all three entities. SASI is governed by a locally elected school board whose five members represent the various chapters of the Navajo Nation from where the students originate.
